"The Mill & the Cross" is inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 painting The Way to Calvary, and based on Michael Francis Gibson's book The Mill and the Cross. Instead of the five hundred characters in Bruegel's original painting, the focus is placed on just a dozen. Set in 1564, christ's suffering and religious persecution in Flanders are key themes.
